Top 10 ways to Gain Clarity!

Sometimes, we just need to get ourselves out of the way of our own greatness.

I think Wayne Dyer puts it brilliantly when he reminds us that for the first 9 months of our existence we hand our destiny over to the creator who handles everything perfectly. We are then born and thinking we know better, we decide to take back control and gradually we become more disconnected from our true power.

To gain clarity in our lives and get closer to our natural self, it is vital that we spend time reconnecting to our inner being, call it your spirit, unconscious, essence or any other such term. Below are 10 top ideas for how to achieve that!

Meditate - There are many different ways to meditate, the aim of which is to help silence the inner voices and allow you to experience true stillness and calm. Whether you attend a Buddhist centre or a local community centre, you can easily find a course in your locality. Alternatively, just find somewhere quiet, sit comfortably and focus on your breathing, trying to slow it down and make it into one continuous movement rather than an in-out action. Find a technique that suits you.

Have a clear out - De-clutter your living space to allow new energy to flow and bring new energy into your life. Get rid of newspapers and magazines, do the washing up and wash and put away your clothes. Getting the vacuum out, cleaning the windows and tidying the shelves will all be reflected with an internal clarity. Also, what’s in your wardrobe? Instead of throwing that stuff out, give your old clothes to a charity shop, and be honest… if you haven’t worn it in 6 to 9 months you probably won’t wear it again… be ruthless and make space in your life!

Exercise - To get clear, the best type of exercise is endurance cardiovascular exercise. Whether it’s running, swimming or a vigorous walk, you will probably find that for the first few minutes your mind is filled with the inane chatter or your inner voice, and many people never get past this point when exercising. However, after usually between 20 and 30 minutes, when your breathing has settled into a rhythm, you will find that voice start to quieten and allow a peace to overcome you. Obviously the fitter you are, the longer you will be able to maintain that state of mind!

Be creative - By using a different area of the brain, you will often turn off the critical and analytical factors of the brain, allowing you to tap into new energies. Why not try painting, music or sculpture to really access the right brain, enabling the logical processes to work behind the scenes rather than dominate your mental capacity. You may even find that by using these often overlooked skills that you become more creative in your day-to-day problem solving too!

Listen to some relaxing music - Music soothes the savage beast! There is something about music that taps into other areas of our consciousness, bringing about in us a whole range of possible emotions. Whether you prefer classical or modern, lyrical or acapella, find something that helps you transcend the here and now and takes you away to a relaxing island of calm.

Laugh - Take one look at him and you might be forgiven for thinking “quack”, but Patch Adams has been prescribing laughter as a therapy to help change the internal environment of his patients. A good chuckle has been shown to improve conditions ranging from stress to cancer, and can also help to tone your abs if you really get into it! You may also find your overall health improving as laughter strengthens the immune system, and it has also been shown to boost your memory! Spend some time laughing every day and get perspective on what is important.

Read a book - Obviously not all books are created equally when we are looking at getting clear. Personally, I find that there are three main types of books that work in this situation. Firstly, any good personal development book based on spiritual principles and higher purpose from authors such as Wayne Dyer or Paolo Coehlo. Secondly, a biography from a morally led world leader such as Martin Luther King Jr. or Nelson Mandela. Finally, a book based on spirituality from people such as the Dalai Lama or Kahlil Gibran.

Explore somewhere new - A change is as good as a rest or so they say. But by changing your external environment, something inside of you changes also. By allowing yourself new experiences, a new richness and vitality will fill your body. And it doesn’t need to be anywhere exotic either; there are plenty of places in this country which I am sure you haven’t visited, and I am sure you don’t even know your own community as well as you could do.

Spend time in nature - There is something about the energy of nature that is infectious. Deepak Chopra describes the energy vibrations of nature as being of the very highest order and able to raise the health of an individual simply by being in its presence. Get into the outdoors, notice how the air is different as it fills your lungs and how everything seems to have even more clarity about it. Allow your different energies to combine and raise you to a higher echelon of awareness.

Free writing - An often overlooked technique, free writing involves putting your entire thought process onto paper. No matter what you are thinking, write it down. Ideally, you are writing so fast that the conscious mind gets turned off and the unconscious is allowed to express itself, so this may take some practice. When you read back through, notice some of the questions that tend to pop up regularly. You should also notice your thought process becoming clearer and more rational as you repeat this exercise.

I hope these ideas are useful. You don’t need to use all of them, but it is important that you regularly allow yourself the time to reconnect internally and gain the clarity required to keep you on course towards your success! Enjoy trying these out!
